5. Abraham Lincoln’s thorough and honorable presidency deserves an A. President Lincoln was a very straight-forward president with concessive goals. Lincoln deserves this grade because of his great determination to end slavery, his preservation of the Union, and his successful leading of America through the Civil War. As an opponent of the expansion of slavery, Abraham Lincoln was very supportive of the Thirteenth Amendment. Issuing the Emancipation Proclamtion in 1863, he promoted equality of all men, as he believed.
Abe Lincoln also halted a confrontation with Britain in the Trent Affair in late 1861. It was under his leadership that the Union took control of the Border States at the start of the war. He exercised unprecendented war powers of thousand of suspected secessionists as well, although his main concern was the military and political dimensions of the war.
Lincoln was extremely focused on the unity of the nation as well, especially after the secession of the Confederate states. Lincoln also supervised the war efforts, pressuring leaders of both parties to cooperate. Abe Lincoln halted the confrontation with Britain in the Trent Affair as well. Under Lincoln’s leadership, the Border States were taken over at the beginning of the war.

A noted successful speech of Lincoln’s is the Gettysburg Address of 1863. The speech focused on equal rights, nationalism, liberty, and democracy. Toward the end of the war, Lincoln hurriedly tried to reunite the nation through the greatly debated Reconstruction. It would accept the South back into the nation, but it worried people that it would mean the re-continued expansion of slavery.

Before the start of Lincoln’s presidency, members of Congress did not approve of his political planning, as he did not always give Congress the information they were looking for. He later learned how to get what he wanted.

Lincoln is the key figure in building the Republican party into the strong party it had come to be. He then organized most northern Democrats to the Union cause and issued the Emancipation Proclamation the freed slaves within the Confederacy. This is clearly a huge success for Lincoln during his presidency.

I gave Lincoln an A on his presidency because of his beliefs in the equality. He was an extremely smart and talented leader and made many decisions that have had lasting impressions on future generations. His perserverance to keep the Union together, his building a strong Republican party, and his determination contributed to this grade. He also worked very hard to discontinue slavery, proving him to be very noble. He was very in tune with the people's wants and did everything in his power to keep them happy to build on a unified nation, which was important to Lincoln.
